What Are Bridal Portraits? A Planner’s Guide to Preparing Brides Properly

If you work weddings in the South, you’ve likely heard the term:

Bridal portraits.

Yet many newer planners — and even some experienced ones — aren’t fully confident on what they involve or how to prepare a bride correctly.

What Are Bridal Portraits? A Wedding Planner’s Guide

Let’s clear it up.

What Are Bridal Portraits?

Bridal portraits are a pre-wedding photo session featuring the bride in full wedding attire.

Traditionally, the session happens:

  • Weeks before the wedding
  • With hair & makeup completed
  • Wearing the gown
  • Carrying a bouquet

The images are often displayed at the reception.

This tradition remains especially popular in Southern weddings.

Why Bridal Portraits Matter

For brides:

  • A trial run of the full look
  • Comfort moving in the dress
  • Confidence boost
  • Heirloom-quality portraits

For planners:

  • Identifies dress fit or bustle issues
  • Tests hair & makeup longevity
  • Clarifies bouquet style/size
  • Prevents wedding day surprises

The Detail Many Planners Forget → The Bouquet

A bridal portrait without a bouquet feels incomplete.

Yet this is commonly overlooked.

Confirm:

  • Will florist provide a portrait bouquet?
  • Fresh vs silk flowers? Although we always use fresh only!
  • Who delivers it?
  • Is it a replica of wedding bouquet?

This is a logistics + expectation detail planners should clarify early.

Hair & Makeup: Not Optional

Bridal portraits are meant to reflect the wedding day look.

Skipping professional hair & makeup results in:

– Inconsistent images
– Makeup that doesn’t photograph well
– Hair that lacks structure
– Regret later

Encourage brides to treat portraits like a full beauty trial.

Planner’s Bridal Portrait Checklist

  • Confirm session date
  • Coordinate gown readiness
  • Arrange portrait bouquet
  • Schedule hair & makeup
  • Confirm accessories
  • Discuss posing style/location
  • Plan image display at reception

Bridal portraits are more than tradition.

They’re:

  • A confidence builder
  • A styling rehearsal
  • A problem-prevention tool
  • A meaningful keepsake

Handled properly, they enhance both the bride’s experience and the planner’s preparation.
