One of the most common questions I get around wedding cakes isn’t about design…
It’s this:
“Who is supposed to cut and serve the cake?”

Because while the cake cutting moment is quick and simple…
Serving the cake to 100+ guests?
That’s a completely different story.
And if it’s not planned ahead, it can turn into confusion fast.
The Short Answer
The couple cuts the cake…
But they do NOT serve it.
That part is typically handled by:
The catering team
The venue staff
Or sometimes the bakery (less common)
Why You Don’t Want Guests Serving the Cake
This is where I always give the same advice:
Do not rely on guests or family members to serve your cake.
It may seem like a way to save money…
But here’s what usually happens:
- No one knows how to properly cut the cake
- Slices are uneven (some too big, some too small)
- It takes way longer than expected
- It becomes messy behind the scenes
- Someone (like “Aunt Betty”) gets stuck doing it all night
And instead of enjoying the reception…
They’re working.
The Best Option: Have Catering Handle It
If you have a catering team, this is absolutely the best route.
They will:
- Cut the cake quickly and evenly
- Plate or serve it to guests
- Keep the dessert table clean and organized
- Make sure everyone is served efficiently
It keeps everything moving smoothly and professionally.
Are There Fees for Cake Cutting?
Yes—most caterers charge a cake cutting fee.
This can vary, but typically:
- A flat fee depending on the caterer
And I’ll be honest…
It is 100% worth it.
Because you’re not just paying for cutting the cake.
You’re paying for:
- Time
- Efficiency
- Clean presentation
- A smooth guest experience
Other Options (If You Don’t Have Full Catering)
If catering isn’t handling the cake, you may be tempted to find another solution…
But in reality, there aren’t many good ones.
Some venues may offer staff to assist—but this is not common, and it should always be confirmed in advance.
In most cases, if you don’t have catering handling cake service, you’ll need to bring in someone specifically for it.
Planner Tip
Always confirm:
- Who is cutting the cake
- Who is serving it
- When it will be served
Do not assume it’s included.
Final Thought
The cake cutting moment is small…
But serving the cake is a big task.
And it’s one of those things where trying to “save a little” can create a lot of stress.
Let the professionals handle it.
Everyone—including Aunt Betty—will be much happier.
